GALA CONCERTS

Wagner / Strauss Gala - Kurfürstliches Schloss Mainz - May 2011
Interpretation with emotional depth
'Already with the first song of the evening "Zueignung" by Richard Strauss, Treleaven enchanted the audience. As well as a wonderfully warm and full timbre, striking clarity in the high notes...'
'...The Siegfried arias offered Wagner specialist Treleaven the opportunity to present the rich diversity of his timbre. In the role of the youthful hero who, as grandson of the God Wotan, fights for the sword Nothung and the love of the Valkyrie, Treleaven's tenor shone brilliantly.'
Allgemeine Zeitung
'The tenor from Cornwall seemed to inwardly prepare himself for his masterpiece, sang engagingly and with strong charisma. In the last piece of the Strauss selection his true vocal mastery shone through.'

Wagner Gala Concert - Ravinia Festival - Chicago
'In the long ensuing duet, she and Treleaven rode the mighty crests of Wagner's plush orchestration without having to force. Their voices were well matched, and his tenor remained firm, focused and attentive to the text.'
Chicago Tribune - July 2010
'Treleaven, who just came off the Los Angeles Rings, was the real surprise, matching Brewer in warmth and spirit and not merely showing earnestness and stamina.'
Andrew Patner - The view from here - July 2010
'Fatigue was nowhere in sight Wednesday night. Treleavan navigated Wagner’s wide, leaping melodic lines with flexibility and ease. In the love duet, the British tenor was utterly convincing as an ardent young lover intent on winning the reluctant Brünnhilde.'
Chicago Classical Review- July 2010
The Song of the Earth - Detroit
'Most of the passion came from the soloists. Tenor John Treleaven sang the opening drinking song with gutsy animation.'
Detroit Free Press
Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) - Badische Staatskapelle
'The guest performer John Treleaven immediately begins jovially with a drinking song and runs through a wealth of emotions: lyrical as well as dramatic and the mystical ones from the refrain of “dark life and dark death” and uses his brilliant and wonderfully timbred tenor voice with emotional depth. The Lieder “Von der Jugend” (Of Youth) and “Der Trunkene im Frühling” (The Drunkard in Spring) follow in the same way. The highest degree of cultured singing corresponds with an excellent understanding of the text and the evocations used come across precisely with subtle sensitivity.'
Der Neue Merker – March 06
Wagner Gala – Bonn Opera House
'When John Treleaven started his Narration of the Holy Grail with a wonderful light piano, even some members of the orchestra were concentrating more on the singer than on their conductor. Anyone acquainted with the Heldentenor John Treleaven, knows that he is a stage performer through and through. He combines singing, portrayal and diction in his roles to perfection. And at the very least during this gala he was able to show that he is also a magnificent concert singer, one who without acting, without grand gestures but with just the expression in his eyes and vocal drama can build up tension to transfix the audience and silence even the last cough.'
